The global problem of obesity needs to be addressed urgently
Almost 17 million people die every year on account of cardiovascular diseases resulting from overweight and obesity. The World Health Organisation estimates that over 1.2 billion people in the world can be officially categorised as overweight, and the number is expected to touch 1.5 billion by 2015.

For the year ending March 2005, cigarette revenues had the honour of crossing a milestone by reaching Rs.100.02 billion; this amounted to 69% of the total turnover (including inter segment revenue). In terms of profits, the ratio is even more staggering. The PBIT (Profit Before Interest and Tax) of the cigarettes business stood at Rs.22.88 billion; nearly 88% of ITC’s total PBIT; this, when the other businesses are yet to break-even!...

Dabur’s consumer care division remained its major revenue generator in the first half of the current financial year. Interestingly, it was Dabur Foods that recorded the fastest growth among all segments. The food segment has emerged as an asset to the company’s bottomline with a 51.2% growth in 2004-05. According to a CII-McKinsey report on food processing, the Indian food processing industry is worth a colossal Rs.2500 billion and has the potential to grow much bigger. But Dabur’s share in this pie is merely 0.05% at Rs.1.42 billion, and it has to focus on tapping this potential.

Intel will lose to VIA if it does not reduce prices
Intel, the chip making giant, has recently launched its two new microprocessors Viiv and Yonah targeting its usual high-end consumers. Though difficult to dent its supremacy, Intel now faces tough competition from Via - the Taiwanese manufacturer that is pushing low cost chips in the market, after years of sniping by AMD..........
