It’s raining accolades for Nandan – now he’s ‘Businessman of the year’

Well, it’s just another feather in his cap. Year 2006 has been a year of accolades for Nandan M. Nilekani, the man who’s one of the architects of the Indian IT revolution. After being christened with one of the highest civilian awards – Padma Bhushan – earlier this year, he is now ‘Businessman of the year’ as per Forbes Asia magazine.

Nandan, who started off as a software engineer, is today the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of a phenomenon called Infosys. Today, the company is India’s second largest software exporter and has evolved as a global leader in IT, and currently, it’s spread across twenty countries. Recently, Infosys saw its profits rise to Rs.9.29 billion for the second quarter of 2006-07, an increase of 53.3% over the same quarter last year. The net sales of the company shot up to Rs.32.73 billion from Rs.21.70 billion for the same period last year, an increaseof 50.4%. In the second quarter of 2006-07, ending September 2006, the company increased its workforce by 10,795 employees, which took the total headcount of Infosys to 66,150. The company, which was listed in the year 1993, currently boasts of a market capitalisation of Rs.1.2 trillion (NSE).
